The project

Wintercircus in Ghent has been given a new purpose as a contemporary meeting place, following its past as a stone circus, garage and partially destroyed building. Located in the city’s Circus District, the site today stands as an architectural and technical tour de force with significant historical value.

Underground, space was created for a concert hall, while the existing structure above ground was carefully restored and reinforced. Sustainability played a key role in the redevelopment: a large Borehole Energy Storage (BTES) field provides heating for the Wintercircus as well as for De Krook.

In this way, the project actively contributes to the City of Ghent’s broader sustainability ambitions.

De werken

The first phase commenced in 2017 with structural repair works and interventions in the basement area. A new level was excavated within the former circus arena to accommodate the underground concert hall.

During the second phase, from 2019 until mid-2022, the superstructure and existing elements were renovated and rebuilt. Given the complex location in the heart of the city centre, a carefully considered approach was essential. Underpinning works were systematically carried out to safeguard the stability of the surrounding buildings.

Thanks to precise planning and extensive experience with urban construction sites, the project was delivered smoothly and efficiently.
