The project

Henleykaai in Ghent is an innovative extension of the Mercatorcampus, delivered through a Design & Build competition.

The building comprises a striking sports complex and around twenty classrooms, designed in accordance with sustainable school construction principles and Nearly Energy-Neutral (NZEB) standards.

Thanks to its multifunctional design, the facility is used by Hogeschool Gent, a secondary school, adult education programmes and local residents. A central public area with a cafeteria and open learning centre connects the different functions. The classrooms are flexibly designed, ready to accommodate future-oriented education.

The project combines efficient use of space with clear social added value.

The works

A key requirement set by the client was the preservation of the existing parking spaces. This was achieved by constructing the sports hall on pilotis, above a semi-sunken parking level.

As main contractor, our role encompassed the full coordination and execution of the project. Through a smart and compact spatial organisation, every square metre was used to its fullest potential. Access routes and interior layouts were carefully tailored to the diverse user profiles.

With a strong focus on sustainability and functionality, we delivered a forward-looking building within the agreed timeframe.
